Covid-19: Weeklong ‘strict restrictions’ imposed in Tangail, Elenga municipalities

District administration has imposed a seven-day "strict restriction" on transport and public movement in Tangail and Elenga municipality areas due to spike in coronavirus cases there.

Deputy Commissioner Dr Ataul Gani, also president of the District Coronavirus Prevention Committee, made the announcement at a meeting of the committee at his office this noon, reports our Tangail correspondent.

The seven-day strict restrictions will remain in force in the two municipalities from June 22, the DC said.

During the period, only kitchen markets, grocery shops and medicine shops will remain open while markets, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants will remain closed.

All vehicles, including rickshaws, vans, CNG and battery-run three-wheelers will stay off the streets. Trucks carrying daily essentials will be out of the purview of the restrictions, the DC said.

The next course of action will be decided after reviewing the coronavirus situation next week, he added.

Tangail-5 lawmaker Sanoar Hossain, district Awami League president and chairman of district council Fazlur Rahman Khan Faruk, superintendent of Police Sanjit Kumar Roy, Civil Surgeon Dr Abul Fazal Mohammad Shahabuddin, Sadar Upazila Parishad chairman Shajahan Ansary, Tangail Municipality Mayor SM Sirajul Haque Khan Alamgir and Tangail Press Club president Jafar Ahmed attended the meeting.

A total of 153 samples were tested in Tangail in 24 hours till this morning and 47 of those tested positive for coronavirus. Of them, 17 people are from Sadar, 18 from Kalihati, nine from Ghatail and four from Sakhipur upazilas.

The number of total coronavirus infected people in the district is 6,109. Of them, 98 died.
