A 60 percent hike in bus fare will come into effect from tomorrow, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said today.

Bus owners have to carry 50 percent passengers of their capacity and have to follow necessary health safety guidelines, Quader said.

The minister said this at a regular media briefing from his residence, Shaikh Walid Faiej, information officer of Bridges Division, told The Daily Star.

The hike in fare will be applicable for a certain period and the previous fare will be reinstated once the coronavirus situation is under control, he added.

A special committee formed to set public transport fare yesterday proposed a 60 percent hike in bus fare, hours after the government directed all public transport to operate at 50 percent of their capacity and maintain health safety guidelines.
