Four policemen were injured when unidentified criminals vandalised a police vehicle in Tangail's Sakhipur upazila early yesterday, police said.

The incident happened around 12:30am when a police team, led by Sub-Inspector Iyub Ali, was going to Borochowna area for arresting Krishak Sramik Janata League and BNP men accused in a case on charges of attacking Chhatra League men, said Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sakhipur Police Station.

A BCL leader lodged the case with the police station a couple of days ago, he said.

Some 50 criminals, equipped with sticks, stopped the vehicle, placing logs on Sakhipur-Sagardighi road near Borochowna Bazar and vandalised the car, injuring the policemen, the OC said.

The gang also blasted a crude bomb on the spot, he added.

On information, police patrol teams from different places in the upazila went to the spot and brought the situation under control.

“The law enforcers later detained five Krishak Sramik Janata League and BNP men from the area in connection with the attack,” the police official said, adding that they suspected the attackers were local KSJL and BNP men.

The injured were taken to Sakhipur Upazila Health Complex at 2:00am. Of them, Sub-Inspector Dayal Chandra Sarkar of Sakhipur Police Station and Assistant Sub-Inspector Foyez Uddin were undergoing treatment there, the OC said.

The Daily Star could not independently verify the incident.

Contacted, Rafiqul Islam, president of Tangail district KSJL, termed the incident a drama staged by police.

The case, which was filed against 55 KSJL and BNP men in connection with attacking BCL men, is “false”, he said.

Earlier, police arrested Atoar Rahman, president of KSJL Sakhipur upazila unit, in the case and Julfiqur Shamim, general secretary of the unit, in another case, he said.
