Bamboo fences go finally on court order
Police here yesterday removed two bamboo fences from Dulali Beel (water body) erected illegally by some local BNP men barring the local Hindu from entering their own land.
The bamboo fencing, locally known as bana, was removed following a court order, said officer in-charge of Aditmari police station Aslam Iqbal.
Over 100 Hindu farmers at Falimari village in Aditmari upazila had been are facing water shortage in cultivating crops, especially Aman paddy, in the beel since early June as some BNP men forcibly erected bamboo fence for fish farming in almost the entire water body blocking the free flow of water, said the farmers.
Despite repeated pleas, Aditmari police did not take any necessary measures to remove the fence put on the two ends of the 800-bigha beel.
Finding no other alternative, the farmers filed a written complaint with the deputy commissioner in this regard on June 10, saying that Bhelabari UP Chairman Mohammad Ali and his brothers and BNP activists Babul Hossain, Shawkat Hossain, cousins Mizanur Rahman, Nizam Uddin and his nephew Rasel Miah had started farming fish in the beel blocking the water flow by erecting bamboo fences illegally.
Later, Mohammad Ali, also president of BNP's Aditmari upazila unit, violated an order of the upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) to remove the fencing, by July 25.
Following a report published in The Daily Star on August 2, Additional District Magistrate Rezaul Alam Sarker issued a suo moto order to remove the bamboo fences, said the court sources.
