UPDF man killed in Rangamati

Unidentified criminals hacked to death a member of United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) in Rangamati's Baghaichhari upazila on Saturday night.

The victim, Natun Moni Chakma, 40, was a resident of Balukhali village of the upazila.

In a press release, the UPDF alleged that MN Larma faction of Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS) was behind the murder.

One and a half years ago, Natun joined the UPDF after quitting the MN Larma faction. On Saturday night, Natun and another UPDF member Amar Ratan Chakma were sleeping at the victim's Balukhali house.

When Natun came out of house around 11:00pm, some 10-12 criminals attacked and hacked him indiscriminately, said the press release signed by Niron Chakma, information and publicity secretary of UPDF central committee.

Contacted, Gyana Jit Chakma, secretary of Baghaichhari upazila unit MN Larma faction of the PCJSS, said Natun might have been killed over UPDF internal feuds. Their party was not involved in the killing.

On December 16, Anol Bikash Chakma alias Pluto Chakma, 42, a UPDF member, was killed in Kawkhali upazila. UPDF central leader Mithun Chakma was shot dead in Khagrachhari Sadar upazila on January 4.

Amir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Baghaichhari Police Station, said police recovered the body of Natun Moni and sent it to Rangamati Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
