UNO, 2 govt staffers face defamation charges

A Tk 1-crore defamation case has been filed against the Azmiriganj upazila nirbahi officer and two other government staffers for tearing off a festoon with photographs of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

Upazila Jubo League member Joydeep Roy Jony filed the case against UNO Pulak Kanti Chakrabarty, Upazila Project Implementation Officer Mohammad Ali and work assistant Md Sakaria of the Local Government and Engineering Department with the Senior Judicial Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Judge Rajib Ahmed ordered a judicial probe into the complaint.

According to the case statement, the two accused government officials tore off the festoon, posted on the upazila office premises marking the Development Fair, on January 13 at the UNO's order.

Earlier on January 14, Mohammad Ali filed a case against 8-10 people, including three Jubo league leaders, for assaulting the UNO.

Later, police arrested a Jubo League activist in connection with the case.
