Two die in hit-and-run in Banani

Driver, ex-MP's son, gets beaten by mob

A youth ran over and killed a bicycle rider with his car and killed another person trying to run from the scene at Banani in the capital yesterday morning.

Mahim Reza, 22, son of former Awami League MP Masud Reza of Barisal, was at the wheels of his Toyota Allion, Wahiduzzaman, officer-in-charge of Banani Police Station, told The Daily Star.

The car first hit a bicycle on Banani-11 7:30am while going towards Airport Road, leaving rider Romen Danga, 43, an office assistant of a private company, dead on the spot, the OC said.

Trying to get away, Mahim then made a U-turn started travelling towards the Banani-11 Bridge on the same road.

He, however, went over a pile of mud on the road, left there by workers of utility service workers. This caused the car, which was at speed, to fly across the street and ram pedestrian Kohinur Alam, 35, a security guard, on the opposite side.

Kohinur died in hospital, he added.

The OC quoting locals said Mahim then got out of the car with his hands together, requesting forgiveness.

Locals, however, gave him a beating and handed him over to the police.

Sanvi Rahman Emon, a security guard who was injured in the incident, told The Daily Star that he was on duty with Kohinur. “Suddenly, I heard a loud sound and saw a car moving towards them from the other side of the road. Within seconds, the car hit us, crossing the road,” he said.

Kohinur died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital around noon, he said.

The OC said when they asked about the driver's licence, Mahim told them that he had lost it during the scuffle with locals at the scene.

He will be produced before a court today, the OC added.

Munni Begum, wife of Kohinur Alam, filed a case in this connection with Banani Police Station, police said.
