Trial of Tareque Sayeed to go on

HC rejects his plea for scrapping trial

The High Court yesterday cleared the way for a lower court to continue the trial proceedings against sacked Rapid Action Battalion official Lt Col (retd) Tareque Sayeed Mohammad in the Narayanganj seven-murder case.

The HC bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Amir Hossain rejected a petition filed by Tareque for scrapping the trial against him in the case.

The bench rejected the plea, considering that the petition was not moved properly.

The case was lodged by Selina Islam Beauty, widow of Narayanganj panel mayor Nazrul Islam, one of the victims killed after abduction in 2014.

On March 15, the same bench rejected another petition of Tareque seeking cancellation of another case filed by Bijoy Kumar Paul, a relative of senior lawyer Chandan Sarker, another victim.

There is no legal bar for the trial court to continue the proceedings of the cases against Tareque following the HC orders, Deputy Attorney General Shaikh AKM Moniruzzaman Kabir told The Daily Star.

Nazrul and his four associates, and lawyer Chandan and his driver were abducted from a Narayanganj road on April 27 in 2014. Their bodies were found floating in the Shitalakkhya river later.

Selina filed a case with Fatullah Police Station on April 28, 2014, and Bijoy lodged another case with the same police station later.

In February this year, Tareque submitted the petitions to the HC, praying to it to scrap the trial proceedings against him in the cases.
