Three hurt as BCL factions clash at DU

Three Chhatra League activists were injured in an intra-party clash in front of Madhur Canteen on Dhaka University campus yesterday.

Imrul Hasan Nishu, drama and debate affairs secretary of BCL central committee; Mahbub Khan, a former central committee member; and Maskat Hossain, an activist; are now undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Witnesses said around 3:00pm, Arefin Siddique Sujon, a vice-president of BCL central unit, told President Saifur Rahman Sohag that the central council of the organisation was going to be held on May 11-12. He wanted to know why he did not form a preparatory committee to hold the council smoothly.

Another BCL activist Aminul Islam Bulbul, former organising secretary of Shaheed Sergeant Zahurul Haq Hall unit BCL, also asked Sohag and BCL central unit General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain how much money they had taken from BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman to remain silent during the quota reform movement of general students, they added.

The two remained silent and some of their supporters answered on behalf of them and also hurled abuse at Sujon.

Over the issue, the two groups were locked in an altercation. At one stage, followers of Sohag scuffled with those of Sujon, said a witness.

Mahbub, one of the injured, alleged that when he tried to pacify both the groups, Sohag asked his supporters to attack those who had been demanding the council.

Contacted, Jakir declined to comment, saying that the incident was their internal matter.
