Ten hurt as AL men clash over PM's visit

Section 144 imposed in Mymensingh

The Gafargaon Upazila Nirbahi Officer in Mymensingh was compelled to impose a ban on gatherings after clashes between two factions of Awami League had left 10 people injured.

Shamim Rahman, the Gafargaon UNO, said section 144 (ban on all types of gatherings) was imposed around 5:30pm for an indefinite period and additional forces had been deployed.

Police and locals said two factions of AL, one loyal to AL lawmaker Fahmi Golandaj Babel and the other to ex-AL lawmaker Capt (retd) Gias Uddin Ahmed, organised rallies at different places in Gafargaon to mark Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to Mymensingh on April 12.

The factions clashed in Tangabo area in the upazila around 2:30pm.

Some 10 supporters of the factions were injured, said Md Muklesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Pagla Police Station, adding that police fired four bullets to bring the situation under control.

Of the injured, two were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Capt (retd) Gias alleged that MP Babel's men attacked a peaceful rally in Tangabo. He claimed that the men also vandalised his vehicle.

Babel claimed that there was no question of his men attacking any rally or Gias's vehicle as they had a programme elsewhere.
