Storm kills 7 in Nilphamari

Seven people, including an infant, were killed when a nor'wester lashed Domar and Jaldhaka upazilas of Nilphamari on Thursday night.

Of the victims, Afiza Rahman, 50, Abdul Gani, 45, Khadiza Begum, 46, Jamirul Islam, 12, were from Domar, while the others -- Samia Begum, 27, and her three-month-old baby Moni and Ashikur Rahman, 22, -- were from Jaldhaka.

Domar Upazila Nirbahi Officer Umme Fatima said farmer Abdul Gani was killed when a tree fell on his house at Gomoti Chaurangi Bazar during the storm around 9:30pm.

Housewife Khadiza and Jamirul died on the spot as trees fell on them in Chilahati and Bhogdapuri, said the UNO.

In another incident, Afiza Rahman, a shopkeeper, died when her tin-roofed shop collapsed on her in Botolganj village.

In Jaldhaka, Samia Begum and her three-month-old daughter Moni were killed as their house collapsed on them after a tree fell on the house, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Jaldhaka Police Station.

Shopkeeper Ashikur died on the spot when a tree collapsed on his shop in Purba Shimulbari village.

The storm also damaged a huge amount of Boro paddy in the two upazilas.
