'Smuggler' killed in 'gunfight' with BGB

An alleged smuggler was killed in a “gunfight” between border guards and his associates at Daulatpur in Benapole early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Ibrahim Hossain, 24, son of Yakub Hossain, a resident of Khoridanga village in Benapole.

Lt Col Tariqul Hakim, commanding officer, 21 Border Guard Bangladesh Battalion, said a team of border guards raided the area following information that smugglers were bringing in smuggled goods through Daulatpur.

Sensing the presence of border guards, the smugglers opened fire on the BGB team, prompting them to retaliate. A gunfight ensued that left Ibrahim dead on the spot, the CO added.

Firoz Uddin, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Benapole Port Police Station, said law enforcers recovered and sent the body to Jessore Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

A homemade gun and two bullets were recovered from the spot.
