Shamsur Rahman's 88th birth anniv today

The 88th birth anniversary of renowned poet Shamsur Rahman will be observed today.

Different socio-cultural organisations have drawn up elaborate programmes to celebrate the anniversary.

Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote, Bangla Academy, Jatiya Kabita Parishad and Shamsur Rahman Smriti Parishad will jointly organise a discussion and cultural function at Rabindra Chattar on the Bangla Academy premises at 4:00pm.

Bangla Academy President Prof Anisuzzaman, also chair of the Smriti Parishad, will preside over the function. Cultural personality Ramendra Majumder and poets Rabiul Hussain and Muhammad Nurul Huda are expected to join the programme, among others.

Private television station Channel i will telecast a special episode on "Shilpo Binodon" at 5.30pm, marking the poet's birthday.

Rahman was born in Old Dhaka on October 23 in 1929. His poems largely feature the Liberation War. Barnomala Amar Dukhini Barnomala, Asader Shirt, Tomake Pawar Jonno Hey Swadhinata and Udbhat Uter Pithe Cholechhe Swadesh are some his works depicting various aspects of national transitions at different times.

The number of his books published in his lifetime is 112, including four novels, 67 on poetry, a short story, and six translations.

He made his professional debut as a journalist of the daily Morning Sun in 1957. Later, he worked for Dainik Pakistan and Dainik Bangla, where he also served as its chief editor.7777
