'Robber' killed in mob beating

An alleged robber was killed and another injured in a mob beating in Nawdapara area of Chapainawabganj's Gomostapur upazila yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Raihan, 24, son of Bakkar Ali of Birampara village in the same upazila.

The injured, Sabdul, 40, son of Mohiuddin of Jambaria village in Bholahat upazila in the district, was undergoing treatment at Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex.

Shahin Kamal, officer-in-charge of Gomostapur Police Station, said a gang of robbers snatched a motorcycle in Nawdapara area from one Golam Mortuza of Kanchontala village on Thursday night. 

Locals chased the fleeing gang and caught Raihan and Sabdul while others managed to flee. The mob then beat up the two men mercilessly.

On receiving information, police rushed to the area and rescued the two robbers and took them to Gomostapur Upazila Health Complex where Raihan died around 6:00am.

The body has been sent to the sadar hospital for autopsy.
