Prof Mustafa Nur-Ul Islam passes away

National professor and Language Movement hero Mustafa Nur-Ul Islam died yesterday.

He was 91.

The scholar passed away at his home in Dhaka around 9:30pm, according to the cultural affairs ministry.

He was born on May 1, 1927, in Bogra. He graduated from the University of Calcutta in 1948 and obtained his post-graduate degree from the Dhaka University and PhD from the London University.

In 2011, he was honoured as a national professor of Bangladesh. He was also awarded Ekushey Padak in 1981 and Independence Day Award in 2010.

The national professor led the Bangla department of the Jahangirnagar University and also taught at the Rajshahi University.
