Two friends murdered in Dinajpur

Police recovered throat-slit bodies of two men in Batapara area of Dinajpur’s Birganj upazila early yesterday.

The victims Biplob Chandra Roy, 30, Hanifur Rahman, 32, both hailing from Birganj, were good friends, said locals.

Police and locals suspected that the duo was murdered over cricket gambling.

“The killers of Biplob and Hanifur were professionals,” said police sources.

Around 5:30am, locals of Debipur village in the upazila noticed the bodies lying on a road and informed police. On information, the law enforcers rushed to the spot, recovered the bodies and sent those to M Abdur Rahim Medical College morgue for autopsies, police said.

The criminals took away a motorcycle and a mobile phone from the victims, police added.

Shakila Parvin, officer-in-charge of Birganj Police Station, said Hanifur’s brother Halimuzzaman filed a murder case with the police station.

Police detained two persons for interrogation in connection with the murder, she said.

Syed Abu Sayem, superintendent of police in Dinajpur, said police were investigating the murder but yet clueless.

Mozaffar Ali, a night guard in the area, told The Daily Star that he saw two men standing beside a motorbike on the spot around 3:30am. Two bodies were also lying beside the motorbike.

“I thought they had an accident. As I went there and asked them if something was wrong, the duo standing beside the motorbike hit me with sticks and forced me to leave,” he said.
