Former DSCC engineer, wife sued by ACC

They allegedly amassed Tk 3.7cr beyond known sources of income

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday sued an additional chief engineer of Dhaka South City Corporation and his spouse for amassing Tk 3.7 crore worth of wealth from beyond the known source of income.

The accused are Abdus Salam and his wife Reshma Majumdar Shampa alias Reshma Salam, a private hospital doctor. ACC Assistant Director Mujibur Rahman filed the case with its integrated district office in Dhaka.

According to the case statement, the couple submitted their wealth statement on October 9, 2016, one month after the ACC asked for it.

The document showed that Salam owns moveable and immoveable properties worth Tk 7.92 crore, but there was no mention of legal sources for Tk 2.36 crore.

“Therefore, it appears that he earned the money from beyond the known source of income, which is an offence,” reads the case statement.

His wife Reshma stated that her moveable and immoveable properties add up to Tk 3.45 crore, but she could not mention the legal source of Tk 1.34 crore.

Based on its analysis, ACC says in the case statement that Salam gathered the money from beyond the legal source and cited it as his wife’s income to cover up the offence. The couple invested the money in the stock market and other sectors, it adds.

The wealth statement covers the period from June 1984 to January 2016.

Abdus Salam has been suspended since 2014 after being accused in a money laundering case in 2012. ACC filed the charge sheet in the case in April this year.
