Schoolgirl raped in Lalmonirhat

A female student of class ten was raped in a village of Lalmonirhat's Kaliganj upazila yesterday morning, police said.

The alleged rapist, 27-year-old Mashiur Rahman from the upazila's Chandrapur village, was on the run till evening.

Quoting the victim, Arju Md Sajjad Hossain, officer-in-charge of Kaliganj Police Station, said the incident happened around 8:00am when the girl was returning home from her tutor's house.

All of a sudden, Mashiur intercepted her way and forcibly took her to a roadside bamboo bush in the foggy morning and raped her, the OC said, quoting the girl.

As she kept screaming, some locals rescued her, but the alleged rapist managed to flee. She was later sent to Lalmonirhat Sadar Hospital for medical examinations, he added.

Her father filed a rape case against Mashiur with Kaliganj Police Station.

Talking to The Daily Star, he demanded capital punishment for the accused.

"Police are conducting drives to arrest Mashiur," said the OC.
