Near Rohingya Camp: 3 'robbers' killed in a 'gunfight'

Three Rohingya men, suspected to be robbers, were killed in a “gunfight” with police near Nayapara Refugee Camp in Teknaf, Cox's Bazar yesterday.

The dead -- Nur Alam, 23, Mohammad Jubayer, 20, and Hamid Ullah, 21 -- used to live in B, H and A blocks of the camp respectively, said police.

Pradip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge of Teknaf Police Station, claimed they conducted a raid near “H-block” of the camp on information that a gang of robbers was hiding their arms in the area.

Sensing police presence, the gang members opened fire, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, he added.

At one point of the “gunfight”, the three sustained bullet injuries. They were then rushed to Teknaf Upazila Heath Complex where doctors declared them dead, the OC further claimed.

Three policemen -- Sub-Inspector Swapan, Constable Mehedi and Constable Mong -- also sustained bullet injuries during the gunfight, the OC said.

Police also claimed to have recovered four light guns (LGs) and seven bullets from the spot.

A case has been filed with Teknaf Police Station regarding the “gunfight”.

Asked, OC Pradip said the three dead were accused in five separate cases including murder.

According to the camp sources, the dead were cohorts of noted Rohingya robber Nurul Alam who was killed in “gunfight” with Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) on February 22.

ANOTHER ROHINGYA FOUND DEAD IN CHATTOGRAM

Chattogram Metropolitan Police found the body of a Rohingya man near Bangladesh Railway Museum in the Chattogram city yesterday night.

The dead Md Jane Alam, 44, went missing on Friday night from Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he took his wife for treatment, said police.

Sheikh Nasir Uddin, officer-in-charge of Khulshi Police Station, said locals found the body and informed police. On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body around 6:30pm.

Jane Alam was carrying a fake national ID card with him that mentioned he was from Cox's Bazar. However, police recognised him as a Rohingya in primary investigation, the OC added.

Police suspects he was strangled to death, the OC said, adding that Jane's family members were informed about the incident.

The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College morgue for autopsy, he added.
