‘Robber’ killed in ‘gunfight’ in B’Baria

An alleged member of an inter-district robber gang was killed in a “gunfight” with police in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj upazila early yesterday.

The dead is Saddam Hossain, 26, of Kalikachha Beparipara in Sarail upazila of the district.

Ashuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Jabed Mahmud said acting on information that a gang of robbers gathered in Jatrapur village of Ashuganj, a team of law enforcers from Ashuganj Police Station, Brahmanbaria Sadar Police Station and district DB raided the area around 1:15am.

Sensing police presence, the robbers opened fire, forcing the lawmen to retaliate with gunshots, triggering the “gun-battle”, he said.

Saddam was shot and he died on the spot, he claimed, adding that police arrested three other members of the robber gang, the OC said.

The trio were identified as Akash Mia, 27, of Birasar area of Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila, Hridoy Miah, 25, of Nathpara area and Ashraful Islam, 25, of Uchaliapara area of Sarail upazila.

Four policemen were also injured in the incident, the OC said.

Police claimed to have recovered a CNG-run auto-rickshaw, a motorcycle and a pistol from the spot. They said these were used in various robberies in the past.

The OC also claimed that the robber gang had been active in the areas for some time and that Saddam was facing a several cases filed with different police stations in the district.
