Rifat Murder: Saimon on 3-day fresh remand

Saimun, one of those accused in the sensational Rifat Sharif murder case, has once again been placed on remand.

A Barguna court yesterday granted police three days to grill the 22-year-old.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Sirajul Islam Gazi passed the order after police produced him before the court seeking a five-day remand.

This is the third time Saimun will be facing a police remand.

Earlier, police interrogated him for five days and three days, said Humayun Kabir, the investigation officer (IO) of the case.

Police arrested Saimun from near Patuakhali Girl’s High School on June 29.

Saimun is a close friend of Rabbi Akon, another accused named in the first information report, according to the IO.

“Many years ago, Saimun’s wife Mithila bought a sim card using Rabbi’s NID card. This led police to suspect Saimun,” Humayun told this paper.

A group of youths hacked to death Rifat, 25, in broad daylight in front of his wife near Barguna Government College on June 26. A video of the brutal attack sparked outrage across the country.

Rifat’s father Abdul Halim Dulal Sharif filed a case with Barguna Police Station the same day accusing 12 people.

So far, six people -- Oli, Tanvir, Chandan, Hasan, Sagor, and Najmul Hasan -- had given confessional statements, the IO said.
