Rape of 6th Grader: Teacher sent to prison

A Brahmanbaria court sent a madrasa teacher to jail on charges of raping a sixth grader, while two youths were sued for allegedly raping a teenage girl in Narayanganj yesterday.

The 12-year-old victim in Brahmanbaria is now 12 weeks pregnant.

Police and the victim’s family said accused Abul Bashar is a mathematics teacher at a madrasa in Kasba upazila. He was also a tutor of the victim.

According to the case statement, the girl used to go to his home to take lessons. One day around three months ago, Bashar was at home alone when he raped the girl.

On Sunday, the victim’s family noticed some abnormalities in the girl, who felt severe pain in her abdomen, the girl’s father told The Daily Star.

The girl was taken to Kasba Upazila Health Complex for medical checkup on Monday. Doctors there informed the victim’s family that the girl is pregnant.

The girl later told the family that Bashar raped her.

She also alleged that the teacher threatened to kill her if she disclosed the matter.

On that day, the victim’s family filed the case against Bashar and he was arrested that night, said Abdul Karim, assistant superintendent of police (Kasba circle).

During primary interrogation, Bashar confessed to the police that he raped the girl, the police official added.

In Narayanganj, a case was lodged against two youths for allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Araihazar upazila.

The accused are Md Sipon, 19, and his cousin Jamal Miah, 20, of shelter centre in Charlaxmipura area.

Quoting the victim’s uncle, who filed the case, police said Sipon had been stalking the girl for a long time. On September 26 night, Sipon forcibly took the girl to an abandoned house with the help of Jamal and raped her.

After the incident, the accused kept threatening the victim’s family.

In fear, the family did not go to the police, said the uncle.

The girl was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for medical tests.

The case was lodged with Araihazar Police Station yesterday, five days after the incident.
