3 men raped, murdered the nurse

Bus driver confesses; class-I student raped in Habiganj

Bus driver Nuruzzaman, one of the accused in the murder case of nurse Shahinoor Akter Tania, gave confessional statement at a Kishoreganj court on Saturday.

Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Md Al Mamun recorded the statement under section 164 in the afternoon and later sent him to jail, said Sarwar Jahan, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Bajitpur Police Station.

Quoting the statement, the OC said, “Nuruzzaman confessed that he, along with his helper Lalon Mia and another man, killed the woman after raping her inside the bus.”

He, however, did not name the third accused for the sake of investigation.

Earlier on Tuesday, police arrested five people in connection with the murder. All of them were placed on an eight-day remand on the following day.

Meanwhile, the post-mortem report into Tania’s death was submitted to police yesterday, said Habibur Rahman, civil surgeon of Kishoreganj. Quoting the report, the civil surgeon said Tania was gang-raped before being killed.

A team of three doctors, led by Sajib Ghosh, of the Forensic Department at Kishoreganj General Hospital conducted the autopsy.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (Dhaka Range) Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun visited the spots yesterday. He also spoke to the victim’s family members and gave some “important directives” regarding the case, said the OC Sarwar.

Quoting the accused, earlier police said that three people, including bus driver Nuruzzaman and his helper Lalon, raped nurse Shahinoor Akter Tania inside the vehicle, hit her head with a blunt object and then threw her out so that the incident looks like a road accident.

As locals rushed to rescue Tania hearing her screams, the accused lied that she jumped off the bus herself, Masrukur Rahman Khaled, superintendent of police in Kishoreganj, told The Daily Star.

Earlier on Tuesday, the victim’s father filed a murder and rape case with the police station naming four, including the driver and his helper, and some unknown people.

On May 6, 24-year-old Tania, who worked at Ibne Sina Hospital’s Kalyanpur branch in the capital, died in mysterious circumstances in a passenger bus on her way home in Kishoreganj’s Katiadi upazila.

Tania, daughter of 65-year-old farmer Gias Uddin in Baherchar village, was the youngest among six siblings.
