No tickets for rebel supporters
Says Hasina about dissidents
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last night said Awami League MPs who took a stance against the party in the recently held upazila parishad polls would not get party tickets in the upcoming elections.
After a meeting of the Awami League Parliamentary Party (ALPP) at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Hasina also directed party MPS not to get involved in any kind of internal feud in their respective constituencies.
“You were elected MP with the Awami League ticket. But you are working against the Awami League. We have to look into the matter,” ALPP President Hasina was quoted as saying by an MP from Dhaka division.
“People who are acting against the party in the upazila polls will not get party nominations in the future,” Hasina was quoted by another MP elected from Dinajpur district as saying.
More than three others lawmakerss also echoed this.
Hasina made the comments when many AL rebel candidates won the upazila polls held between March and June. In many occasions, MPs supported rebel candidates, going against party nominated candidates.
Hasina also asked MPs to stand by the people who elected them. She also asked them to stay beside party activists and not to get involved in internal feuds, several MPs said after the meeting.
They said Hasina, also AL president, directed all MPs at the meeting to be more disciplined while attending parliament and doing party politics in their localities.
She asked immediate past MPs and ministers to vacate MP hostels as soon as possible. “These flats are not for your drivers or guards”, she said. “Vacate these flats.”
Hasina also asked MPs to clear their dues of ALPP membership fees and set up party offices at upazila and district as soon as possible.
She also asked MPs to control social crimes and ensure proper expenditure of the allocation for budgetary development their localities.
The meeting started about 8:30pm, after the day’s parliament proceedings ended about 10:15pm.
AL MPs Abul Kalam Azad, Monnuzan Sufian, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, Atiur Rahman Atik, Shamim Osman, Momotaz Begum, among others, spoke at the meeting.
