An elderly farmer was beaten to death allegedly over a debt of only Tk 100 in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh on Sunday.

The dead Azizul Haque Sheikh, 60, was a resident of Joynakanda village.

Quoting his family members, Abdul Ahad Khan, officer-in-charge of Gafargaon Police Station said Azizul's son-in-law Farid Mia borrowed Tk 1000 on interest from Sohagh Mia, 25, of the same village about two years ago.

Farid used to pay the interest on a regular basis and recently he repaid the principal amount along with other dues, the OC said.

But Sohag demanded Tk 100 more as interest and had been pressing Farid to pay the money.

As Farid refused to pay the sum, Sohag and his friend Lalu Mia, 28, went to Azizul's house on Sunday morning and started scolding him over the dues.

As Azizul protested their move, Sohagh and Lalu allegedly beat him ruthlessly, said the OC.

Critically injured Azizul was taken to Gafargaon Upazila Health Complex where the doctors declared him dead.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to Mymensingh Medical College morgue for an autopsy, the OC added.

Victim's son Atiqul Islam lodged a case with Gafargaon Police Station accusing seven people.

Police arrested Lalu's wife Sabina Akter, 22, for her alleged involvement in the incident. Sabina was produced before a Mymensingh court yesterday and the court sent her to jail.

Police have been conducting drives to arrest the other accused, said the OC.
