Mother, child killed during school run

A woman and her seven-year-old daughter were killed in a road accident in Joypurhat Sadar upazila yesterday morning.

Rifa Akhter, 32, wife of Nur Alam of Sundarpur in the upazila, was taking her daughter Anika Akhter to school, said police.

Officer-in-Charge Shahriar Khan of Joypurhat Police Station said a truck at speed rear-ended the battery-run-three wheeler the two were in at Helkunda around 10:00am.

Locals got them out of the wreckage and sent them to hospital where doctors declared them dead on arrival, the OC said.

The bodies were handed over to the family, he said, adding that they seized the truck but its driver and helper had fled.
