Mother, 2 kids murdered at home in capital

Police last night recovered the bodies of a woman and her two children from their flat in a five-storey building in the capital's Dakshinkhan area.

They suspected that the trio were murdered a couple of days ago as their bodies were decomposed.

The dead are Munni Begum, 37, her son Farhan Uddin, 12, and daughter Layeeva Bhuiyan, 3.

Police suspected that Munni's husband Raquib Uddin Bhuiyan, an official of Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited (BTCL), committed the killings as he had been missing for a couple of days. The motive for the murders was not clear.

Nabid Kamal Shaibal, deputy commissioner (Uttara division) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said they recovered the bodies from the flat on the third floor of the building after receiving information from locals.

A police official, who was present during the recovery of the bodies, said Munni's head was smashed with a blunt object. A hammer was recovered from near her body. Her children might have been choked to death.

Police said a brother of Munni went to the house yesterday afternoon after failing to contact the victims and Raquib for a couple of days.

As he found the front door of the flat locked from outside and smelt foul odour coming out of the flat, he along with some neighbours of the victims broke the lock and saw the bodies of Munni and her daughter lying on a bed and that of her son on the floor.

The family had been living in the flat since 2011. Raquib was recently transferred to the BTCL's Uttara office from Gulshan.

Locals said they last saw Raquib in the locality on Tuesday.

The bodies were sent to the morgue of Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College for autopsies.
