Missing JnU student in CID custody

She was arrested over ‘derogatory’ FB remarks on religion

The Criminal Investigation Department in a text message to reporters yesterday evening said they arrested Jagannath University student Tithy Sarkar who had been missing since October 25.

She was sued under the Digital Security Act yesterday for making "derogatory" comments about religion on Facebook.

The message stated that CID would hold a press briefing at 12:00pm today about the arrest.

Contacted, Jisan Haque, senior assistant superintendent of CID (media), said, "CID arrested Tithy in the evening. That is all we can disclose at the moment. The rest will be revealed at the press briefing."

According to her family members, Tithy went missing on October 25 morning after leaving her Pallabi home for the local police station. Her elder sister Srity Rani Sarker filed a missing persons report with Pallabi Police Station on October 27.

However, Tithy's family was not informed of her arrest. The news took them by surprise when they were contacted. "Around 8:00pm in the evening, Tithy's friends told me that her Facebook account showed 'active' status. We have been wondering what happened. Now we know."

Tithy was suspended from the university on October 26 as well as from her post as the office secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad's JnU unit on October 23.

Some screenshots of Tithy Sarker's Facebook posts and comments that allegedly hurt religious sentiments went viral on social media that day.

On the same day, Tithy filed a general diary with Pallabi Police Station, stating that her Facebook account had been hacked.
