Man held over gang rape of woman

A man was arrested in Gazipur on charges of the abduction and gang rape of a woman. Meanwhile, another man was arrested in Jamalpur for raping a garments worker.

In Gazipur, a Rab team arrested the accused Sohag Mia, 35, of Myemensingh, from Joydevpur's Manipur area around 1:30pm yesterday. 

The victim, 23, was abducted from a village in Mymensingh on September 5 and taken to a house in Gazipur's Sreepur upazila, said Abdullah Al Mamun, in-charge of Rab Porabari camp.

Later, Sohag and three of his friends forced her to drink a sedative, after which they raped her, Mamun said, adding they also filmed the incident and released the video on social media.

On December 3, the victim filed a case with Sreepur Police Station against the three and sought help from Rab, he said.

Rab was able to arrest the main accused following a shadow investigation. The law enforcers said it is trying to arrest the others accused.

Meanwhile in Jamalpur, police arrested Nazmul Hasan Babu, 25, on charges of raping a garments worker on Monday night.

Nazmul is an entrepreneur of an information service centre of Nilkhira union parishad in the district's Bakshiganj upazila, police said.

The victim, 20, filed a case with Bakshiganj Police Station on Monday night, accusing two, including Nazmul, said Shafiqul Islam Samrat, officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station.

On January 14, Nazmul instructed the victim to come to the union parishad office when she asked for her birth certificate.

After she arrived, Nazmul took the help of another man and raped her there.

Police is trying to arrest the other accused, the OC said.
