Man caught red-handed during rape

A man was caught red-handed while raping a 36-year-old mentally challenged woman in Bahalgachia area of Patuakhali's Sadar upazila yesterday, said police.

The accused is Alom Akon, 60, of the upazila's Jainkathi area.

Alom took the woman to a nearby brickfield and raped her when she was returning home from a special school around 2:00pm, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Patuakhali Police Station.

Hearing her scream, locals rescued the woman and caught Alom red-handed. At that time, a team of Rab-8 was passing by who rescued the victim and detained Alom from the spot, he added.

Later, Rab handed over Alom to police and sent the woman to Patuakhali General Hospital, the OC said.

The victim's mother filed a case with the police station against Alom around 7:00pm, he further said, adding that police would take necessary steps in this connection.
