Man beaten to death in port city

A young man was beaten to death allegedly by his gang members in the port city’s Kattoli area early yesterday over a mugging incident.

The dead is Mubarak Hossain, 20, of Dakkhin Kattoli area.

Mainur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Pahartali Police Station, said police arrested two members of the gang -- Md Rubel and Md Hridoy -- over the murder.

The police official said the gang members, including Mubarak, Rubel and Hridoy, had been involved in criminal activities, like mugging and theft, for long.

Quoting locals, the OC said the three and their other gang members were talking to each other near the CDA market. At one stage, Mubarak slapped Rubel after an altercation ensued between them over a mugging incident.

Rubel left the spot and came back a few minutes later along with several others and started beating Mubarak. At one point, Rubel hit Mubarak’s head with a bamboo stick, leaving him critically injured, said the OC.

Mubarak was taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead, said the police official. 

A case was filed with Pahartali Police Station in connection with the murder.
