With onion prices still unstable, an initiative to sell the essential at Tk 45 per kg by Police Nari Kalyan Samity (Punak), an association for welfare of the female members of police families, generated strong buzz among port city dwellers.

Onions will be sold on the premises of five police stations -- Kotwali, EPZ, Khulshi, Chandgaon and Pathartali -- in the city for a week. On the first day yesterday, people from all walks of life were seen forming queues to buy onions

Wives of Chattogram Metropolitan Police officials started the sale in front of Punak Bhaban at Dampara.

At Kotwali Police Station, law enforcers were seen selling onions to consumers from a mini-truck.

“I came here around 11am after reading about the initiative in a newspaper and bought one kg [onions],” said Saudi expatriate Parimal Gosh.

Sayed Didarul Alam, an operator of Government Post Office, said, “It would have been better if they sold two kg  onions per persons. Still, it’s a praiseworthy move.”

CMP Commissioner Mahbubor Rahman told The Daily Star, “Daily one tonne of onions will be sold at each police station, and law enforcers are assisting the initiative taken by Punak.”
