MP 'unwanted' in own seat
Dinajpur AL leaders say he is involved in graft, patronising Jamaat-Shibir; lawmaker denies
Local Awami League leaders have declared AL lawmaker Monoranjan Shil Gopal unwanted in his own constituency, Dinajpur-1, alleging that he is involved in corruption, patronisation of Jamaat-Shibir men and harassment of party activists.
At a rally Wednesday evening, AL leaders of Birganj and Kaharol upazilas made the declaration. Birganj-Kaharol Oikya Parishad organised the rally in front of Birganj Police Station with Hamidul Islam, law affairs secretary of Dinajpur AL, in the chair.
The image of the ruling AL have been tarnished by his “corruption” during recruitment in different schools and colleges, and in establishing new electricity connections, they said, adding that Monoranjan had also not been involved in local AL politics.
He illegally amassed a huge amount of money in the last 10 years, they alleged.
The lawmaker supported Jamaat-Shibir men in exchange for money. He worked against the party nominated candidates in Birganj municipality, two upazila parishad and union parishad elections. He even filed cases against the party men to harass them, the AL leaders claimed.
They also alleged that the lawmaker used his men to grab the land of the Hindus in Birganj and Kaharol upazilas. While the Sheikh Hasina-led AL government was developing the country, the lawmaker took a certain percentage from different government development projects being implemented in his constituency.
“We are declaring that he is unwanted as he tarnished the image of AL,” said Zakaria Zaka, president of Birganj AL.
Denying all allegations, Monoranjan said he was a victim of political vengeance and a quarter was trying to damage his image so that he could not get nomination in the next general election.
Abu Hossain Bipu, former vice-president of central Chhatra League, Nutrias Sayeed, president of Birganj Jubo League, Shibli Sadiq, president of Birganj Krishak League, Hafizul Islam, general secretary of Kaharol AL, Raziur Rahman, joint general secretary of Kaharol AL, and Arun Chandra Roy, president of Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Oikya Parishad, among others, spoke on the occasion.
