The first ever hospital just for pet care is scheduled to begin operation, with the objective of providing treatment and healthcare to pet animals, at Purbachal in the capital later this month.

An initiative of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (CVASU), “Teaching and Training Pet Hospital and Research Centre” will offer hands-on training to interns and post-graduate veterinary doctors.

Khalilur Rahman, deputy director (public relations) of CVASU, said the hospital would consist of a medicine, surgery, gynaecology and obstetrics, and radiology and imaging units.

The hospital is scheduled for inauguration on October 28, said CVASU officials.

“CVASU is the country's first ever specialised university of its kind and so we thought of establishing a hospital just for pets, as there is no other such hospital in the country,” said Dr Md Manirul Islam, professor of the Department of Animal Science & Nutrition at CVASU.

“We send our graduates to different universities in the world including those in India, USA and Thailand for training and internships,” he said, adding, “I hope, after inaugurating this hospital of international standards, students from different countries will come here for training and internships.”

Contacted, Professor Dr Goutam Buddha Das, vice-chancellor of CVASU, said their main objective was to help intern veterinary doctors become competent graduates through the use of this hospital.

“It would be a modern hospital with all kinds of facilities, including digital X-ray, ultra-sonogram, anaesthesia and operation theatres for pets

“Initially, alongside outdoor treatment facilities, five beds would be in the hospital, while three lecturers, two veterinary surgeons, three dressers and intern veterinary doctors would provide treatment to patients of the hospital.”

Asked, why this hospital was being established in Dhaka instead of Chattogram or any other city, the VC said the location for the hospital was selected in the capital due to the presence of a huge number of pet owners in the city.

“A significant number of Dhaka residents have pets in their houses, including diplomats and a number of foreigners who reside in Gulshan, Banani and Baridhara areas. They have been facing trouble regarding the medical treatment and healthcare facilities of pets due to the absence of a hospital,” said Goutam.

He added that besides interns of CVASU, interns from veterinary faculties of other universities and colleges would have equal opportunities to pursue their internship in this hospital.
