France stops 11 migrants crossing English Channel

French maritime authorities intercepted 11 migrants trying to cross the English Channel in an inflatable boat early yesterday, one of a rising number of attempts despite freezing winter temperatures.

Five of the migrants were suffering from hypothermia.

French gendarmes picked up the group 15 nautical miles (28 kilometres) northwest of Calais in the early hours after several ships raised the alarm.
