Five to die for killing teacher in Khulna

A Khulna court sentenced five people to death in the case of killing kindergarten teacher Kazi Tasfin Hossain Toyon. Each of those convicted was also fined Tk 50,000.

Md. Nazrul Islam Hawlader, Judge of Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal passed the verdict yesterday.

The convicts are Kazi Murad Hossain, Kazi Rounakul Islam Rono, Kazi Md Forhad Hossain, Zakir Hossain and Md Saiful Islam. Among the accused, Zakir Hossain is absconding.

Two other accused, Kazi Sabbir Hossain Fahim and Kazi Masum, were released as the allegations against them were not proven.

Advocate Md Ahaduzzaman, who was appointed on behalf of state, told The Daily Star that the convicts killed Toyon, 32, on August 28, 2018. Later, the victim's father filed a case on September 8 in this connection with Khalishpur Police Station of Khulna.

Toyon was the son of Kazi Ferdous Hossain Tota of Khalishpur's Muzgunni area. 

The private school teacher was killed on August 28, 2018 and buried in a ditch. Police later recovered the body after arresting an accused. 

This year, Home Ministry identified the case as shocking and sent it to the Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal.

According to the case statement, Toyon had gone missing on the afternoon of August 28. 

After his father filed the case, officials of Khalishpur Police Station arrested Md. Saiful Islam, who was accused in the case, by tracking his mobile phone. Upon interrogation, Saiful confessed that he and his associates had killed Toyon.

Police then recovered the body from a ditch Later, the accused Saiful and the other accused, Kazi Murad Hossain, gave confessional statements under section 164 in the Metropolitan Magistrate Court.

Police later arrested the accused, with the exception of Zakir Hossain. 

Sub-inspector Md Mizanur Rahman, the investigating officer of the case, charged seven people and submitted the charge sheet in the court on December 10 of the same year. Of the 22 witnesses mentioned in the charge sheet, 18 testified in court.
