First year of Bangladesh Bangabandhu’s nation-building challenges

AUSTRALIA-BANGLADESH JOINT COMMUNIQUE

Australia and Bangladesh agree to expand economic cooperation to strengthen bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, says a joint communique issued today in Dhaka. The Communique is signed by the foreign ministers of the respective countries. They also discuss Australian assistance in developing agricultural productivity in Bangladesh. Bangladeshi Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad expresses gratitude on behalf of the government and the people of Bangladesh towards the government and people of Australia for their invaluable support during the freedom struggle of Bangladesh. The Australian Foreign Minister Nigel Hubert Bowen assures that his country will support Bangladesh's membership in the UN and other international bodies.  Later, he calls on Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at his official residence.

TRI-PARTY NATIONAL COMMITTEE TO TACKLE NATIONAL CRISIS

It is reported that a tri-party national committee comprising members of Awami League, NAP (Muzaffar group) and Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) will be formed to tackle the emergency problems in the country. CPB President Moni Singh and NAP President Muzaffar Ahmed today call on Bangabandhu to discuss formation of the National Committee. Muzaffar Ahmed shares with journalists that the committee will primarily deal with pressing issues such as price hike, hoarding, corruption, smuggling and law enforcement. CPB and NAP will work hand in hand with the government at all levels except joining the Cabinet, he adds.

KEROSENE DISTRIBUTION THROUGH RATION SHOPS

Kerosene will be distributed through ration shops in Dhaka and Narayanganj, says a government press note today. It will be sold at Tk 2.75 per gallon. 

USAID OFFICIALS CALL ON BANGABANDHU

A delegation of USAID officials led by the organisation's Deputy Director Donald G. MacDonald calls on Bangabandhu today at his official residence. In the 45-minute long meeting they discuss various issues, including ongoing relief and rehabilitation works in Bangladesh.
