A faction of teachers and students of Jahangirnagar University brought out a procession on the campus yesterday, demanding resignation of its Vice- chancellor Prof Farzana Islam over allegation of corruption.

At least 20 teachers and around 100 students took part in the procession, which began from the social science faculty and ended in front of the administrative building around 1:00pm.

Ashikur Rahman, a spokesperson for the movement that continues since August 23 against unplanned development on the JU campus and corruption, said the university’s general students would never accept taxpayers’ money going to Chhatra League leaders.

“We want to tell the VC that she should resign from her post or else the general students will force her to step down,’’ he added.

In another development, Bangabandhu Shikkhok Parishad, a teachers’ platform also known as VC-backed teachers of the university, yesterday demanded resignation of Pro-VC (admin) Prof Amir Hussain, saying that he was conspiring against the VC, said a press release.

The release added that the pro-VC would have to be out of the university’s admission process, alleging that he was involved in an admission forgery when the BNP government was in power.

The platform also demanded completion of investigation against the pro-VC and sought his punishment.

Contacted, the pro-VC refuted the allegation of conspiring against the VC.

He added that the allegation of admission forgery was brought against him by VC Prof Mustahidur Rahman’s administration as part of their political agenda.

He said Mustahidur was appointed VC during the BNP regime.

“I had written to the then chancellor of the university and also the president of Bangladesh in this regard. The chancellor replied and the matter ended,” he added.

He asked why was the issue raised again? It is just to cover up the VC’s allegation of corruption and irregularities, he said.

“If I am controversial, then why did the VC pick me as pro-VC,” Prof Amir asked.
