Attack on Students: JU sues 250 unnamed villagers

Jahanginagar University authorities yesterday filed a case against 250 unnamed locals who allegedly attacked students on Friday evening over a cricket match.

JU Assistant Registrar (security) Jefrul Hasan confirmed the matter to The Daily Star.

"I, from the university authority, have filed the case mentioning 250 unnamed attackers with Ashulia Police Station, the number is 59/21," he said.

On Saturday, this decision was taken at an emergency syndicate meeting chaired by JU Vice-Chancellor Professor Farzana Islam.

Meanwhile the protesting students yesterday gave a 24-hour ultimatum in a press briefing to the authorities to file the case and demanded reopening of the campus and dormitories.

Samia Hasan, one of the protesting students, placed a six-point demand including ensuring security of all students who are now staying in Gerua area and providing compensation to all injured students.

Contacted, Professor Motaher Hossain, president of JU provost committee, said, "We haven't received any directions regarding reopening of dormitories. We won't take any initiative without the permission of government."

A number of male students are staying in the halls from Saturday night but the female halls have remained locked up by the authorities.

At least 30 students were injured in clashes between JU students and villagers in Savar's Gerua Bazar on Friday evening over a cricket match.
