Attack on Secy’s Home: Two cases filed, 3 arrested

OC withdrawn

Two cases were filed early yesterday over the attacks on an assistant commissioner (land) and the workers of an under-construction community clinic in Katiadi, Kishoreganj.

Assistant Commissioner Ashraful Alam filed one case and engineer Atiqur Rahman of Kishoreganj Public Health and Engineering Department filed the other, police said.

Also yesterday, MA Jalil, officer-in-charge of Katiadi Police Station, has been withdrawn, said Kishoreganj Superintendent of Police Mashrukur Rahman Khaled.

Assistant Commissioner Ashraful accused four named and 20 unnamed men, said Inspector Shafiqul Islam of Katiadi Police Station.

Police arrested Mehdi Hasan, 24, Kamal Hossain, 40, and Ataur Rahman Minto, 52, on charges of being involved in the attack.

A group of people laid siege to the village home of Health Secretary Abdul Mannan in Katiadi Saturday afternoon and attacked the assistant commissioner who was there at the time.

The attackers were apparently angry at the health secretary, but failed to hurt him. Assistant Commissioner Ashraful was injured in his legs.

Meanwhile, Health secretary Abdul Manan has been declared persona non grata in Katiadi by Dilip Ghosh, acting president of upazila Awami League, at a rally in the town.

Secretary Mannan's family members said they donated a piece of land where a community clinic was being constructed.

But people close to lawmaker Nur Mohammad, who is also of the same village, said the lawmaker was not informed about the matter.

Mannan went to his village home on Friday night and was visiting the under-construction clinic around 11:00am on Saturday. Around 20 people then went to the spot and asked Mannan to stop the construction work.

They had an argument with him and left, said locals, adding that the men returned with sticks around 12:40pm and shoved the construction workers away.

The men then went to the health secretary's home and attacked the officer who was there at the time.

MP Nur Mohammad said some villagers were not happy that he was not informed about the construction of the clinic and they  had an argument.

Many officials visited the scene after the incident.
