Anwarul Islam to be next cabinet secy

Senior Secretary to Bridges Division Khandker Anwarul Islam is going to be the next cabinet secretary, Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal told reporters yesterday.

He will replace Mohammad Shafiul Alam, who will be appointed as alternative executive director of the World Bank as Muhammad Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan’s tenure in the WB ends in October.

The new appointments will be effective from November 1, Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told The Daily Star.

Khandker Anwarul Islam joined civil service in 1983.

He became secretary on January 31, 2013 and senior secretary on July 13, 2017. He is also the ex-officio executive director of Bangladesh Bridge Authority. Before this, Anwarul Islam worked in the cabinet division as additional secretary.

He joined Bridges Division under the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges as secretary (in-charge) on November 13, 2011.

Anwarul Islam earned his BSS (hons) and MSS in social welfare from the University of Dhaka. He also holds a postgraduate diploma in development planning.

16 SECRETARIES TO RETIRE

A total of 16 secretaries will retire this year and 24 more in 2020, said sources in the bureaucracy.

Of the 474 additional secretaries, over 250 are from the batch of 1986 or before.

On the basis of seniority, additional secretaries from the 1986 batch are supposed to get priority for promotion.
