AL man beaten to death in Ctg

An Awami League (AL) leader was beaten to death at his in-law's place at Tayarpur village in Satkania upazila of Chattogram early yesterday.

The dead is Belal Uddin, 48, general secretary of Khagaria ward-4 unit AL, said police and local sources.

There was a longstanding feud between two groups of locals of two villages over establishing supremacy in the area, said Anwar Hossain, officer-in-charge of Satkania Police Station.

Belal went to his in-law's village at Tayarpur on Tuesday when the rival group found him alone and started beating him with sticks around 10.00pm, he added.

Critically injured, Belal was rescued by the locals and rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries around 1.00am, said the OC.

Police were investigating the incident.

No case was filed as of 2.00pm yesterday, said the OC, adding, police detained one -- Jahid, 30 -- in connection with this incident.
