Actor Sadek Bachchu passes away

Renowned actor Sadek Bachchu passed away yesterday in the capital's Universal Medical College Hospital.

He was 65.

After testing positive for Covid-19, he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on September 6. He was then moved to Universal Medical College Hospital, where he was on life support.

He left behind his wife and three children.

Sadek Bachchu was born as Mahbub Ahmed Sadek in Chandpur on January 1, 1955. He was a retired

employee of the Bangladesh Post Office and acted in more than 500 films in a span of five decades. He received the National Film Award for the film Ekti Cinemar Golpo.

Known for his negative roles in films, Bachchu came into the limelight with the critically acclaimed film Chadni, directed by Ehtesham, back in the 90s.

Jibon Nodir Tire, Koti Takar Kabin, Pita Matar Amanot, Shujon Shokhi, Mayer Chokh, Amar Praner Shami, Bhalobasha Zindabaad, Badhuboron, Lobhe Paap Paape Mrittu and Mon Boshe Na Porar Table E among others are some of his notable films.  

He also worked in theatre, radio and television. His debut television show Prothom Ongikar aired in 1978, while his debut film, Ramer Sumoti, directed by Shahidul Amin, was released in the 80s.  

Gronthik Gono Kohe, Jonaki Jole, Shojon Badhiar Ghat, Purbo Ratri Purbo Din and Nakshi Kanthar Math are among his popular shows for BTV.

Founder and president of Matijheel Theatre, Bachchu was lauded for his performances in plays like Kafoner Pocket Nai, Cap and Kulangar among others, while Khelaghor remains one of his most famous radio shows.  

"He was like a father to me," said actor Omar Sunny. "I have worked with him for thirty years. We last worked together in a film directed by Uttam Akash. The industry will always be grateful to him for his immense contributions. I will miss him."  

Actor Shabnaz said, "I met him during my debut film Chadni. Bachchu uncle, Nayeem and I became very close and went on to work in films like Soniya, Dil, and Chokhe Chokhe among others… I wish he had more time with us. May the Almighty grant him the best place in Jannah."

Bachchu was laid to rest at the Khilgaon Taltola Graveyard.
