Abrar Murder: Case moved to speedy trial tribunal

Buet student Abrar Fahad murder case was yesterday transferred to the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka for quick disposal.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order in the presence of 22 out of the 25 accused in the case.

Earlier, the government decided to hold trial of the case at the Speedy Trial Tribunal-1. In line with the government decision, the law ministry on March 12 sent a letter to the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court of Dhaka that was holding the trial.

The Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 of Dhaka set April 6 for hearing on the charge framing against the accused.

Abrar, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, died after he was brutally beaten up allegedly by some Chhatra League men at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university on October 7 last year.

On November 13, Investigation Officer Md Wahiduzaman of 

Detective Branch of police submitted a charge sheet against 25 accused to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka.  

Of the accused, 11 had direct links with torturing Abrar and the rest were involved in abetting and planning his murder, the charge sheet mentioned. 

The incident triggered a firestorm of protests on campuses across the country. Many took to social media to demand justice for Abrar.
