Four to die for killing schoolgirl after rape

A Manikganj court yesterday sentenced four people to death for killing a fourth grader after rape in the district’s Singair upazila in July 2008.

The convicts -- Enamul, Ramjan, Hakim and Faizul – are from Waijnagar village in the upazila. All of them are now aged between 30 and 32.

Of them, Hakim is in jail while the rest are on the run.

Judge of Manikganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Ali Hossain handed down the verdict around 2:00pm.

According to the verdict, the four raped Romana Akhter, daughter of Chan Mia and student of a local Brac school, at a jute field nearby her school and later, strangulated her to death in the morning of July 16, 2008.

The court came up with the order after examining testimonies of 15 witnesses of the case, said AKM Nurul Huda Rubel, public prosecutor of the tribunal.

Romana’s uncle Kadam Ali filed a case with the Singair Police Station following the incident.
