2 women raped in N'ganj, Satkhira

One of them speech-impaired

Two women, including one with speech impairment, were raped in separate incidents in Narayanganj and Satkhira in the last two days.

A speech impaired woman, aged about 40, was raped by a local youth Hridoy, 22, in Siddhirganj of Narayanganj around noon on Saturday, said, Hafizur Rahman, sub-inspector (SI) of Siddhirganj Police Station.

“The youth forcibly took the woman to a nearby abandoned house while she was on her way to a sibling's house and raped her,” the SI said, adding that the locals rescued her after hearing her screams, but could not capture the rapist.

However, the victim's brother, with the help of other locals, detained Hridoy from Siddhirganj's Madbar Bazar area around 8:00pm and handed him over to police, Hafizur said.

A case was filed in this connection, the SI said, adding that the youth admitted of raping the woman in primary interrogation.

The woman was sent to Narayanganj General Hospital for necessary medical tests, he further said.

In Satkhira, a youth allegedly raped a mother of two in Tala upazila early yesterday.

According to the victim, one of her neighbours Monirul Islam, 32, raped her by threatening to kill her children.

Talking to The Daily Star, she said Monirul used to stalk her quite often in absence of her husband, who works at a brick kiln in Barguna.

On the night of the incident, he entered her room by breaking the door around 2:00am and raped her by holding the children at knifepoint, she added.

Later, locals rescued her, she further said, adding that the youth fled the scene sensing presence of the locals.

Talking to journalists, the victim's uncle said they would file a case against Monirul.

Mehedi Russel, officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, said necessary action would be taken after a complaint is filed.

Dr Asim Kumar Sarker of Satkhira Sadar Hospital said the woman was receiving treatment at the hospital and had recovered well.
