2 killed in ‘shootouts’
Two men were killed in separate “gunfights” with police and Border Guard Bangladesh men in Chattogram and Cumilla yesterday.
A 21-year-old murder suspect Jabed Hossain was killed in Chattogram city’s Agrabad area in a “gunfight” with police.
Ashikur Rahman, assistant commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, claimed they conducted a raid in the area around 12:30am on information that a group of robbers had gathered there.
Sensing police presence, the robbers opened fire, forcing them to retaliate, he added.
During the “gunfight” Jabed sustained bullet injuries. Later, police rushed him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead, the AC further added.
Officer-in-Charge of Double Mooring Police Station Sudip Das sustained multiple bullet injuries during the “gunfight”, police said.
Police also claimed to have recovered four firearms, including a lost pistol of police, two magazines, 13 bullets, three cartridges and a folding knife from the spot.
Jabed was a suspect in Jubo League leader Mohiuddin Sohel murder case. Although his name was not mentioned in the First Information Report, police found his involvement during investigation, Inspector Jahir Uddin (investigation) of Double Mooring Police Station, said.
The body was sent to Chattogram Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Meanwhile, an alleged smuggler was killed in another “gunfight” with BGB men in Jaluapara area of Cumilla’s Sadar upazila yesterday.
The dead is Malek, 30, of Naogaon.
Lt Col Abu Mohammad Mohiuddin, commanding officer BGB Battalion-10, claimed they conducted an “anti-drug operation” in Jaluapara area around 4:30am.
During the raid, BGB and smugglers exchanged gunshots. At one point of the “gunfight” Malek sustained bullet injuries. When BGB rushed him to Cumilla Medical College Hospital, doctors declared him dead, the BGB official added.
BGB also claimed to have recovered 29,860 pieces of yaba pills from the spot.
The body was sent to Cumilla Medical College morgue for autopsy.
Abu Salam Mia, officer-in-charge of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, confirmed the incident.
The Daily Star, however, could not independently verify the law enforcers’ claims.
