Two held over rape in Lalmonirhat

Joypurhat court sentences rapist to 42 yrs in jail

Police yesterday detained two men over raping a teenage girl in a house in Teesta village of Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila and rescued her from there.

The detainees are: Atiqul Islam Atiq from Teesta village  and Nirmal Chandra of China Bazar area in Kurigram's Rajarhat upazila.

Police said the 17-year-old girl was in a relationship with Atiqul. She went to Teesta village from China Bazar with Nirmal on Wednesday evening on the promise that Atiqul would marry her.

The girl was gang-raped in the house at night, said police.

Acting on information from locals, police raided the house yesterday noon, detained the alleged rapists and rescued the victim. However, the owner of the house managed to flee.

The OC said the girl would be sent to a hospital for medical examinations. Her family members went to the police station to file a case in this regard.

RAPIST GETS 42YRS IN JAIL

A Joypurhat court yesterday sentenced an absconding accused to jail for 42 years for raping a teenage girl, who later died by suicide to escape social stigma, in Joypurhat Sadar upazila in 2012.

The convict is Masud Rana, a resident of Haripur Uttarpara village in the same upazila. The victim also hailed from the same village.

Judge Md Rustam Ali of Women and Children Respression Prevention Tribunal in Joypurhat delivered the verdict in a crowded courtroom.

According to the prosecution, Rana raped the 16-year-old girl on June 30 in 2012. The victim died by suicide the following day.

On July 3, her father filed a case with Joypurhat Sadar Police Station against Masud Rana.
