Shooting 10-Year-Old

MP's arrest demanded

People in Gaibandha yesterday demanded the immediate arrest and resignation of Manzurul Islam Liton, a ruling party lawmaker, who allegedly shot a 10-year-old boy in the district recently.

At a sit-in organised by the Samajtantrik Chhatra Front on the premise of Gaibandha Shaheed Minar, they also demanded exemplary punishment for the culprit.

”A lawmaker himself violated child rights by shooting an innocent school-going child,” said Nilufer Easmin Shilpi, president of the district unit of Chhatra Front.

“A drug addict cannot remain as a lawmaker and that is why he should be removed immediately,“ said Monjurul Alam Mithu, secretary of Gaibandha Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal (Marxist).

At a human chain yesterday morning, speakers made the same demand. Several human rights bodies jointly organised the programme on DB Road in Gaibandha municipality area.

”The inhuman act of Liton tarnished the image of Awami League,” said Mihir Ghosh, secretary of Gaibandha Communist Party of Bangladesh, bringing corruption allegations against several family members of the AL lawmaker from Gaibandha-1.

On Friday morning, Sourav Mia, a class IV student, was shot in the legs in Gopalcharan of Sundarganj allegedly by Liton for no reason.

According to locals, Liton, also president of Sundarganj AL, is a drug addict. He often threatened his rivals brandishing guns and fired shots into the air, creating panic among the people.

Talking to The Daily Star at Rangpur Medical College Hospital where Sourav is being treated, his mother Shelly Begum asked, “What was my son's crime? Why was he shot? What will we do if he becomes a cripple.”
