Lawyers' cooperation needed for quick disposal of cases: SK Sinha

Alongside the efforts of judges, cooperation from lawyers is needed to reduce the backlog of cases faster and thereby lessen the miseries of justice seekers, stressed Chief Justice Surendra Kumar Sinha in Chittagong city yesterday.

Addressing a view-exchange programme in Chittagong Bar Council auditorium as the chief guest, the chief justice said, “It is not possible for judges to establish the rule of law without lawyers' cooperation.”

Bangladesh is the country where the ratio of judges to people is the highest, said Sinha at the programme organised by Chittagong Bar Association.

According to many people, 31 lakh cases are still pending but the actual number is lesser, he added.

The chief justice also ensured that the vacant posts including that of additional sessions judges in Chittagong courts will be filled up as early as possible, and also informed that a plan to establish a Circuit Bench of the High Court in Chittagong court is being contemplated.

CBA President Advocate Mujibul Haque presided over the meeting which was attended by Supreme Court's High Court Division's Registrar Abu Syed Diljar Hussain, Chittagong District Sessions Judge Nurul Huda and Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Shahenur.

SK Sinha also visited different courts under Chittagong district and Chittagong metropolitan judges.
